The Dolphins earlier today tweeted that they have signed Tannehill to a contract extension through the 2020 season.
Tannehill is under contract for the next six years worth $96 million, $45 million guaranteed.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk provided the full details of the contract:
“Per a league source, Tannehill receives $21.5 million fully guaranteed at signing.
Another $3.5 million becomes fully guaranteed in March 2016, and another $3.5 million becomes fully guaranteed in 2017. The rest of the guarantees ($16.5 million) become fully guaranteed in 2018.
As a practical matter, then, Tannehill will get $25 million fully guaranteed over the next two seasons — unless the Dolphins cut him before next March and let him walk away with $21.5 million over one year.”
It’s clear the Dolphins haven’t heard of Daphnieauguste.wordpress.com because I wrote about this back in March. He has improved in every category and he threw for 4,000 + yards this past season. This upcoming season should have been the deciding factor for a contract extension. He has played and started in 48 games since being drafted in 2012, has yet lead the Dolphins to the playoffs and I think the Dolphins would like to be relevant again.
All I got to say is with the addition of rookie receiver Devante Parker, contract extension of center Mike Pouncey, Ndamukong Suh’s $114 million deal, and the possible four game suspension of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, the Dolphins better make the playoffs.
The Dolphins know how to waste money.
